Essaouira - Mogador Cemeteries

Fortified city located at a few hours by bus from Casablanca, full of history difficult to resume in a few lines. In the middle age portugese named this city Mogador (probably a deformed name from Sidi Mogdoul a local marabout. Jewish people had a special status called "negociants du roi" and they are negotiating goods arriving for the Sultan, they even had a monopolistic situation to sell wheat to christians while muslims are not authorized. In 1764 the Sultan decided to implement in Mogador his marine army department. Name has been changed from Mogador to Essaouira after the end of the "Protectorat Français"

The importance of Essaouira grow up until begining of the 20th century, beeing the only one Morrocan port open to international trade during years. You will be able to find money coins stamped with Magen David and city was couting 17'000 jewish people for about 10'000 muslims. Most jewish families left after the six days war.

We have effected a full research of people burried in the two cemeteries (old and recent one), unfortunately many names are not readable and due to location very close to the sea, the permanent wind is slowly ereasing all information.
